Yay GOOD NEWS! ! Remember how I said it’s fanatics who have a louder voice?? Well, here is a chance to let your moderate voice be heard. All you have to do is send your full name (you, your dad, your last) the city you live in (in KSA) and your job to the email address below, and it will be added to the petition inshallah. This petition will be sent to Majlis al shoura where they will hopefully discuss this.

so, what have we got to lose? The more names they have, the more they can prove that that excuse of “most people in saudi don’t want women to drive” and “the people of saudi are happy as things are”  will be proven wrong.

p.s. I got the below excerpt in my email. I apologize to any of you who can’t read arabic, as the long arabic part in the bottom is the petition letter that will be sent to the head of Majlis al shoura. Its too long and technical for me to translate, but it basically refers to articles in newspapers in the past by religious sheikhs defending women driving and saying the past excuses are invalid or stand no more. And then it goes into the legal and human rights argument, plus that the Law stated that “no person can drive without a license” and person means man or woman. Stuff like that.

السلام عليكم ورحمة الله وبركاته، وبعد

نتقدم لمعاليكم بالشكر والتقدير لقراءة خطابنا هذا، كما نتقدم بالشكر لسعادة عضو مجلس الشورى د. عبد الملك الخيال لتقدمه بطلب منح الفتاه السعودية الرخصة الدولية لقيادة السيارة في حال اجتيازها لاختبار قيادة الرخصة داخل المملكة.

معالي الرئيس
الإسلام ضمن للمرأة حقوقها الشرعية والمدنية، وقيادة السيارة حق للمرأة كما هو حق للرجل، وقد وقعت المملكة على اتفاقيات دولية تقضي بعدم التمييز ضد المرأة، ومنها حق التنقل واستخدام وسائله.

وبما انه لا يوجد نص شرعي يحرم قيادة المرأة للسيارة، والأصل في الإسلام الإباحة ما لم يرد نص بالتحريم، فإن مطلب قيادة المرأة للسيارة أصبح اليوم ملحاً لأسباب اقتصادية واجتماعية وأمنية.

كتب الكثيرون عن المخاطر الأخلاقية والأمنية الناتجة عن الاعتماد على السائقين وهي بلا شك أكبر من مخاطر قيادة المرأة للسيارة. الشيخ عبد الله المطلق، أستاذ الفقه المقارن والقاضي السابق في محكمة حائل أعلن رأيه الواضح والصريح حول هذا الموضوع (عكاظ – 4 يونيو2009) مؤكداً أنه “لا يوجد مسوغ شرعي يمنع المرأة من قيادة السيارة”، وأنه يعد دراسة متكاملة يمكن بموجبها السماح للمرأة بقيادة السيارة من أجل درء المفسدة للسائق الأجنبي في المجتمع السعودي، كما دعى إلى السماح للمرأة بقيادة السيارة.

كذلك أعتبر الشيخ أحمد بن باز في مقاله في الوطن (15 يناير 2010) قيادة المرأة للسيارة “قضية حقوق لا قضية أولوية” وأن من منعها من القيادة من مشايخنا الفضلاء في السابق هو “لاعتبارات لا أظنها موجودة الآن أو يمكن مناقشتها وإعادة النظر فيها”، معتبراً أن “الخوف على النساء من أن يعتدي عليهن أحد ليس مبرراً كافياً لمنعهن من القيادة.

لهذه الأسباب، لم تعد قيادة المرأة للسيارة هاجساً شرعياً او اجتماعياً. لا بد وأن معاليكم قرأتم عن الفتاة التي قادت السيارة لإنقاذ أسرتها وثماني أسر أخرى كانت محتجزة في سيول جدة وتم تكريمها على بطولتها وشجاعتها. كما ان هناك دلائل على ان المرأة التي تقود السيارة في القرى النائية كسبت الاحترام لإتباعها للأنظمة المرورية، بما يفوق احترام الرجال لقوانين المرور. وبما ان المرأة تملك رخصة قيادة دولية وتقود السيارة في مختلف دول العالم، فهي قادرة ومتمكنة إن شاء الله من قيادة السيارة في بلادنا.

كما ننوه لمعاليكم أن المادة (32) من نظام المرور تنص على أنه (يحظر على أي شخص قيادة أي مركبة قبل الحصول على رخصة القيادة اللازمة وفقاً لأحكام هذا النظام ولائحته)، وتأسيساً على هذا النص فإن كلمة “شخص” الواردة فيه ليست مقصورة على الذكر دون الأنثى، وبهذا فإن قصر إصدار رخصة القيادة للذكور دون الإناث ليس له مستند من نظام المرور ولا لوائحه التنفيذية.

ليس من المعقول ان يرضى معاليكم أو أي مواطن غيور آخر أن تُراق كرامة المرأة السعودية على أرصفة الشوارع تستجدي سيارات الأجرة وتفاصل أصحابها لتذهب للمستشفى للعلاج أو لمدرستها أو لعملها وتصرف على عائلتها من مهنتها الشريفة.

وإذ نقترح على معاليكم أن يناقش مجلس الشورى الأمر – كمرحلة تجربة – وأن يتم الإذن بقيادة المرأة للسيارة ضمن خطة منظمة في وقت معين من اليوم ويحدد له مدينة أو محافظة مع ضرورة إصدار عدد من القوانين الرادعة والحامية للنساء تطبق بكل شدة والتزام تحميهن من أي تعدٍ عليهن أو تحرش بهن وتُسجل المخالفات ويحال أصحابها فوراً إلى التوقيف والسجن ويغرموا غرامات مرتفعة رادعة بحيث لا يتجرأ إنسان على مضايقتهن أو إيذائهن، وشبيه بذلك ما قامت به دولة الإمارات العربية. وأن يتزامن مع ذلك إصدار قرارات بتخصيص مدارس تعليم القيادة تُعتمد شهادتها لإصدار الرخص، وأيضاً استحداث أقسام نسائية في مراكز المرور تقوم بالتعامل مع الرخص النسائية والمخالِفات واحتياجاتهن. وكذلك تفرض على السيارات التي تقودها النساء أن تكون مؤمنة من الأعطال وموقعة عقوداً مع شركات خدمة الطرق التي تصلها في أي مكان تتعطل فيه سياراتهن. فضلا ًعن ضرورة توعية المجتمع بأن القرار قرارٌ حكومي رسمي يسمح ويحمي من ترغب من المواطنات والأسر ولكنه ليس إلزامياً، وإطلاق حملة توعوية للشباب والمجتمع للتشجيع على قبول قيادة المرأة للسيارة واحترامها مع الإعلان عن العقوبات التي ستطال المتحرشين، حتى يتأقلم الجميع ويصبح الأمر عادياً.

I got this retarded bbm message from a colleague of mine (she sent it to me because it irritated her and she knew I cared about this topic)

the message went as follows:

في مقابلة تلفزيونية في قناة أمريكية مع أحد المشايخ الفضلاء :
قال المقدم :
لم لا تتركون المرأة تقودالسيارة؟
فرد الشيخ:
الرئيس الأمريكي (بوش)
هل كان يقود السيارة في شبابه؟
فقال المقدم:
نعم.
قال الشيخ :
والآن يوم أن صار رئيسا لأمريكا، هل يقود السيارة ؟!
قال المقدم:
لا، بل لو أراد لمنعوه !
فقال الشيخ
ولم ؟
قال المقدم :
حماية له، وتكريما له أيضا !
فقال الشيخ
: ونحن كذلك نمنع المرأة من قيادة السيارة، حماية لها، وتكريما لها،. وحفظ  لشرفها،  حيث يقود بها أبوها وأخوها وابنها وزوجها!

يا ريت يفهموا حريمنا

 

A quick translation for that would be:

In a television interview in the U.S. channel with a virtuous elder (sheikh):
Presenter :
Why do not you let women drive cars ?
the Sheikh replied:
Did the U.S. President (Bush) drive his own car in his youth? (apparently this interview took place a while back)
Presenter said:
Yes.
Sheikh said:
Now since he has become president of America, is he driving the car?!
Presenter:
No, and would stop him if he wanted to!
The Sheikh said,
Why?
Presenter:
To Protect him, and in honor of him too!
The Sheikh said: We also prevent the woman from driving, to protect her and honor her. And in protection of her honor, where her father and her brother and her son and husband can drive her wherever she wants!

Oh, if only our women would understand us!

 

To that ridiculous story circling around I have one reply: I’d like to see the president of the United States of America telling his chauffeur he wants to go out and having his chauffeur say he’s tired and doesn’t feel like it. If this stupid ban was “out of respect and love” so to speak, they wouldn’t let their mothers, daughters, sisters and wives practically beg for a ride. In some cases it is beg. And they Definitely wouldn’t put us in a situation where we are at the mercy and the whims of not only our sons or younger brothers, but even of our drivers. Where they know that we need them to the point where we would let them get away with slacking of, being rude and driving recklessly even!

so yeah, sell your load of poo to someone who will buy it. Arrgh!

Start Saving up for your Dream Car!

Let’s think positive! In order to show that you truly believe that a good thing is going to happen (or a thing that you’ve been hoping for) then you must prepare for it, right? It’s what all those self-motivational books and self-help movies (like the Secret, and no i didn’t read or watch that i think its common sense) talk about! So, I propose two things, lets start thinking; ” If I were to drive my own car, what would it be?” Once you’ve decided on your dream car, start saving up for it!

I’m serious! How else do you expect to be able to drive it one day? Start a savings account for your dream car. Think big! That way, when (not if- seriously this can’t go one forever!) when women are allowed to drive in Saudi, you (or your granddaughter! lol) can have a kick-a** car !!! Start with style, make the guys feel shabby … etc. lol

Another part of thinking positive would be for any of you who don’t have driver’s licenses from other countries to go out and get them! or at least take driver’s Ed and a few lessons! That way, when the time comes, you’ll be ready!

So I’m going o go first… If I could drive any car I like…. I’d start with an Aston martin One-77 !

*sighhh* I saw it a few months ago in a car expo and i was positively salivating over it. So, yep, I got a lot of saving up to do. I’ll need a few years at least, hopefully by then, I’ll be allowed to drive it! If not, well, easy, I’ll just pick car no. 2  (a Jeep wrangler, I’ve always wanted one of those) and start saving up for that. and so on and so forth until I have a garage full of lovely cars !

So ladies, I want to hear what your dream car is! Yallah!

HAPPY NEW YEAR! Squeak!

Happy new year everyone! As usual, we all welcome the new year with renewed energy, hopes and dreams.

I’m not naïve enough to think that women will be allowed to drive in 2011, I’ve just heard news that they banned girls schools from holding PE class, so it seems that dream is further away than ever before. But I do have hope that SOMETHING will happen this year to make this all seem more attainable. So right now, all I’m doing is hoping for a sign. Something that will give me hope.No more bad

news please! lol, or maybe we need a few dozen set backs for women (and men) to wake up andput their foot down. In the end, I think it’s simply a fight between the very loud and vocal extremists (who i truly do not think are a majority anymore), and the silent moderate people who are hoping for things to change naturally. It doesn’t take a genius to know that the louder you are, the bigger you will seem in numbers. and as my grandmother always says “It’s the wheel the squeaks that gets the grease!”

so everyone, lets start squeaking! Squeak squeak!!

haha, hey, I might be on to something here… how about a squeak campaign? everyone who supports women in Saudi, start squeaking…! post it as your status in whatever social network you use. maybe I’ll design a few bumper stickers… lol! I’m liking this! only problem is I’m thinking in english at the moment, and for something like this to really take off its g

ot to be in arabic. That’s the crowd that matters. (no offense to all you only english speakers out there) But to make a change, It’ll have to be with the majority within the country.
